Silvergate Spotlight - Introducing John McKenry

Creating bespoke masterbatch for hundreds of customers in our fast-paced manufacturing environment requires a great team effort, the determination to meet our customers’ needs and a good sense of humour. Throughout 2019, we are shining the Silvergate Spotlight on the people who make a difference to ensure you enjoy a fantastic customer experience. This month, we introduce our Warehouse Manager, John McKenry. As well as offering an insight into his role here at Silvergate, John shares his sky-high ambitions and how he was once crowned Pancake Man of the Year!

Tell us about your role here at Silvergate Plastics.

As Warehouse Manager, I am responsible for overseeing goods in, dispatch and exports. I work closely with our Sales team to ensure our products are delivered within a timely manner and to the full satisfaction of our clients.

How long have you worked here?

I joined Silvergate over 25 years ago! Back then, things were run very differently; we didn’t have the sophisticated software systems we have in place today. I used to drive goods to customers throughout the UK before returning to the warehouse to organise the next dispatches. These days, everything is monitored digitally and we work with a number of logistics partners to transport our products to locations across the globe.

What attracted you to your role?

I have always worked in warehousing but was attracted to Silvergate Plastics because it had a reputation for being a family-orientated business. Whilst the company has transformed and grown, we have retained this culture and everyone here is approachable, helpful and friendly. Our management team is very supportive and accommodating of individual needs.

What do you enjoy most about Silvergate?

The people! Everyone here gets on really well and is willing to help each other.

What is the best thing about your job?

I take great pride in maintaining an organised warehouse. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction. I also enjoy meeting customers and providing tours of our manufacturing facility, as we are able to clearly demonstrate our commitment to upholding the highest standards.

What three words best describe you?

Loyal, good-looking and witty!

Do you have a favourite band?

Queen. I went to see them twice and they were absolutely brilliant.

If you could take up a new hobby, what would it be?

If I was a bit braver, I’d like to try paragliding but I don’t have a head for heights!

Do you have a hidden talent?

When I was at school, I really enjoyed art classes. I used to paint landscapes but nowadays I don’t get the time to practice.

What do you enjoy doing away from work?

My wife and I live in a cottage in the countryside, which is perfect for long walks with my dog, Doogle. He has a great character and is good company.

What is the strangest job you’ve ever had?

One of my first jobs was working for a food manufacturer. They used to host an annual pancake race and the year I worked there, I won and crowned Pancake Man of the Year. It was all completely bonkers!
